Osseo Cross Country Week 4 Recap

By Eli Hoff

The Osseo cross country team began to hit its stride last week as the school year began. Practices switched from being held in evenings to right after school, and runners quickly learned how to cope with both workouts and classwork.

The group had a chance to enjoy themselves on Wednesday night, when Osseo alumni James Hersch and Kevin Kling, the latter who ran for Osseo during his time at the school, performed their show “Home Again”. In front of an estimated 500-person crowd, Hersch sang touching songs about growing up in Osseo while Kling told heart-warming stories from his experiences that elicited more than a few chuckles. The event raised money for the Osseo Cross Country Alumni Association’s scholarship fund.

The next day, the team made its way across the Twin Cities to Hastings for the traditionally difficult Dewey Minnaert Invitational. Performances were strong from both the boys’ and girls’ squads. The girls finished 6th in the competition with an average time of 22:16 for a full 5-kilometer race. Alexa Davis (8th grade), Lauren Sanderson (freshman), Gabbie Baltes (8th), Liz Vang (junior), and Camille Corneia (sophomore) scored for the young group.

Osseo’s boys put together a strong showing as well, finishing 8th with an average time of 18:29. The team was led by Vaughn Thomas (senior), Noah Ruud (junior), Darian Clark (senior), Vaughn Ruska (freshman), and Eli Peterson (sophomore).

The weekend was bookended with team fundraising events. Runners bagged groceries over Labor Day Weekend and volunteered at the Osseo Lions Roar 5K, which directly raises money for the cross country team.

The Osseo Cross Country team will participate in the Rum River Invite on September 14th at Anoka High School, a course known for producing fast times. Details can be found at www.osseocrosscountry.com.
