The Osseo wrestling team fell to Maple Grove 41-20 Friday, Dec. 11, in the annual dual in honor of coaching legend Ken Droegemueller.
The meet was well contested with several matches that could have gone either way but in the end, the Crimson brought home the coveted trophy for the third straight year. A couple of key matches featuring a pair of young Osseo standouts going to the mat with two of Maple Grove’s top veterans.
At 132 Oriole returning all conference sophomore Elan Quezada battled Crimson senior Jack Herbes, a 2014 state entrant, with Herbes edging Quezada in a 10-8 cliff-hanger. Oriole freshman Taylor Meissner battled fourth-rated, multiple time state entrant Logan Dick to the wire at 170, with the Maple Grove senior holding off Osseo’s relentless youngster for a 4-3 decision.
The Orioles posted wins by sophomores Bryce Donahue (106), Dominic Smith (120), junior captain Mitchell Lewison (138), sophomore Adam Lanners (160) and junior heavyweight Scott Christopher, with a 31 second fall.
On Saturday, Dec. 12, Osseo scored 67 team points to finish ninth of 12 schools at a very tough Chanhassen-Chaska Invitational. The team title was claimed by sixth rated Owatonno (188), followed by top contenders Chaska/Chanhassen (151.5), Minnetonka and Wayzata tied (127).
Meissner continued his great start on Saturday with two more wins, including a fall and a silver-medal finish at 170. Lewison and Lanners also extended successful early season runs with third place, bronze medalist finishes at 138 and 160. Lewison won two of three matches, including a fall. Lanners, who recently earned his 50th varsity career victory, also won two of three, including a major decision.
Also earning places were: Christopher (4th/hwt), Elan Quezada (6th/132) with one fall, Donahue (seventh/106) with two falls, Smith (seventh/120) with two tech-falls.
“After a tough loss to Maple Grove the boys bounced back with a solid performance at Chanhassen,” commented Oriole head coach David Ahmed. “We are seeing improvements each week and the young guys are gaining experience that will help them as the season continues.”
