Orioles News · Three Orioles Qualify For State Wrestling Tournament

As the first day of practice looms and the wrestlers are gearing up for another grinding
season, many set their ultimate goal with ending the season at State. And every coach stands
firmly behind each athlete, pushing and encouraging, and doing whatever it takes to make those
goals a reality. The Osseo Orioles are no different. They’ve lasted another season of ups and
downs, overcome disappointment and enjoyed the good times. This group of individuals, some
veterans and others rookies, has been molded to be a great team. Coach David Ahmed, along
with assistants Scott Lewiston, Ko Quaye and Kenny Green are excited to watch their athletes
compete in the State tournament.
With the team Sections firmly behind them, focus was set on Individuals and the hopes of
returning to State. It was one match at a time for the Orioles, and staying in that moment. They
wrestled tough each round. And when it was all over, final nails chewed off, and heart rates
settled, Osseo would see 3 wrestlers marching on to the Xcel.
Senior and captain, Adam Lanners will be representing the Orioles at 170 lbs. Beginning
each season with his eyes focused on State, he will finally get his chance. Last season saw the
tolls that illness can have, as he tried to fight the inevitable. An illness that cut his season down,
as well as stole his opportunity to wrestle at State. It only made him more determined this
season. He wrestled with focus and purpose every match, and he will reap the benefits of his
hard work. Now that he is a State entrant, and that goal is fulfilled, he now focuses on placing in
the State tournament.
Another amazing story that played out this season was that of junior Taylor Meissner.
Sidelined for most of the season recovering from knee surgery, he remained hopeful that his
season was not over before it began. Slowly easing his way back, under doctors orders, he felt
the challenges this sport brings. With visible frustrations during practices and small set-backs in
the few matches he wrestled, it would not be an end all for Meissner. Determined to push harder
and work through any frustration, he continued to stay positive on his chances of a State
showing. Through all the obstacles that came his way, he never said State wouldn’t happen.
Ever optimistic, he saw his goal come to fruition at the Section tournament. And he will now, as
did Lanners, set his new goal at State placer.
The Orioles will also see 9th grader Jagger Schack on the mats of the Xcel. Schack will
wrestle in the 220 lb weight class. With a long and bright wrestling future ahead of him, Schack
will get a taste of many more appearances to come.
The Sections tournament also saw several other Orioles stand on the podium. At 113 lbs,
freshman Thomas Cornell finished in 6th place. Wyatt Doubler, also a freshman, finished 5th
place at 138 lbs. Senior Adolphus Summerville placed 6th at 145 lbs. And just missing out on a
State appearance were 8th grader Jacob Meissner(160 lbs) and senior Abraham Kamara(195
lbs), finishing 3rd in their classes.
Good luck to all of the State entrants this weekend!!
